L'America

A first kiss, do you remember? Gentle at first, his lips exploring every curve of her neck, then hungry, then greedy..."Tu sei perfetta," Cesare shispered into her ear, and his words becaem all of her body.

Cesare is a cosseted Italian boy, raised in the wealthy town where his family has lived for five hundred years.Beth is an ambitious American dreamer, born to hippies and raised on a rural commune. In the brilliant sunshine of a small Greek island they meet-and begin a transforming love affair that spans two continets, two decades, and two lifetimes. As their passion struggles against the pull of culture and country, their story unfolds against the backdrop of a lush Italian land scape and the thrumming streets of New York, catalyzed by the events of September 11. Asensuous immersion in place, an acute exporation of the divide between old world and new, L'America is above all an evocation of the dizzying, life-changing power of first love.
The novel of a American in Europe has a long and lustrous pedegree. With this dreamily exquisite story Martha McPhee joins the tanks of its most impressive practitioners.

"Anyone who has ever traveled to a foreigh country and fallen in love with the country or a person-will relishL'America. I savored every moment of this moving,clear-eyed novel like a great Italian meal.Though satisfied, I never wanted it to end."

She met him on a small Greek island floating in the Aegean like a song. She was eithteen yeats old. He was standing on some steps leading to a whitewashed pensione, strggling to speak with the landlady, to negotiate a price. The sun was on him, caught in him hair as if he could shake it free.Beth watched him, the gesturing of his hands, listened to the odd and unfamiliar words. The old landlady was dressed in black, hunched over and thick around the waist. The sun lit him,Beth would remember that detail forever, the way the wun illuminated him as if for her benefit. And then the way he turned, as if he could feel her eges on him. His eyes locked on her, for a instant only, but long enough ofr her to feel a shock-a jab, a stab-and then nothing was ever the same.
